First Flight of the Comet Jet Airliner

Christine Martindale

In 1949 the de Havilland Aircraft Company introduced the world to the age of the Jet airliner. The idea was conceived in 1943 but it wasn’t until 27 July 1949 that the prototype of the D.H.106 first flew from Hatfield, with a single main undercarriage and rectangular windows.

As a teenager Albert Jackson, living in Hatfield Garden village, witnessed the Comet’s first test flight from Hatfield and managed to take photographs of the plane flying over the rooftops.

Listen to Albert’s memories as well as two others who also remember the first flight of the Comet Jet Airliner

  • I remember the first flight to the far east I was in the royal navy and saw it land in Singapore and take off for Hatfield made me feel homesick
