Hatfield Rural District Council

Staff Photo

By Michael Browne

This is a photograph is of the complete staff of the Hatfield Rural District Council taken in 1955 outside of their satellite office known as North Place on the Great North Road (I’m pleased to see it’s still there) which housed the Engineers, Architects and Public Health  departments.  I know that a number of us younger members in the photo are still going strong.

I was there from Aug 1952 until Feb 1956 and then Feb 1958 until Oct 1959 as a Junior Engineering Assistant (third from the right). Seeing the folk in the photo brings back some very pleasant memories of the starting years of my working life. The staff were dedicated to be a true service to the public and their training set me up for my 50 years of work. I started on my 15th birthday and retired on my 65th with only 2 years National Service and 4 months due to redundancy lost. 30 years of it in Local Government.
