Girl Guiding

By Jean Cross

Memories of Jackie Wesley

I was introduced to Brownies when my daughter became a Brownie. I was asked if I would perhaps be able to help out with the weekly meeting.

So started my involvement with Guiding!

As I was never a Brownie or a Guide I was enrolled at one of the weekly meetings

We met every Thursday evening at St. Johns Hall in South Hatfield. We were 5th Hatfield Brownies. Joyce Dixon was Brown Owl and I was Tawny Owl.

We went on days out to events such as Brownie Revels where we all met in Hatfield Park and had a really good day playing games, making things and also we always had a sing-song – great days!

I went on several Pack holidays to places such as Well End, Bentley Heath and others. The Pack Holidays always had a theme. I can’t remember all of them but I remember being Kanga out of Winnie the Pooh and also Tinkerbell from Peter Pan.

I was with 5th Hatfield Brownies for may years but had to give up owing to other commitments.

My time spent there was both enjoyable and great fun. i made lots of friends whom I keep in touch with still.

  • Hello – I am looking into the life of my grandmother and I believe she was a nanny or governess to Mabel A Gibbs at the Old Rectory Hatfield. Would anyone have any information about this – I think she was there during the first world wat. Many thanks Gillian Brooks
