To help the WW1 war effort Waters Garage, on the London Road, setup a munitions factory.  The workshop was run by Jens Christiansen an engineer from Denmark.

His Daughter-in-law Mary, recounts that Jens told her, that for the duration of the war, he had to report to the police station every morning, before starting work, he was classified as an foreign national!

The factory made shell casings which can be seen in the photo.
