Hatfield Schools in History
This page provides an index to past schools that are known to have existed in Hatfield. As early as 1596, the Bishop of London granted Robert Cloughe, schoolmaster, a licence to teach in Hatfield, but where and to whom he taught is not known.
Information starts to emerge from the 1700s when two Charity Schools were founded in Hatfield. These and other past schools are included here. A prime source of information for these pages were the “Hatfield and its People” series of booklets (republished by Hatfield Local History Society in 2014). Hatfield census returns from the 1800s were also helpful.
