  • Hey Mrs C Beaumont, does one of your lads names begin with the letter L? If so I was in his class with Mrs Morris 😀

Fond memories, kids who went to this school had such a privileged start an amazing building and caring staff. I moved up to Milton Keynes in 1987 aged 9, gosh it was a culture shock! Going from the Howe Dell to a modern boring brick school! I missed Howe Dell and all my mates there so much.

If that is your son then please send him my best regards. I remember him very well. He can find me on facebook under my new name (I changed it). I am also in contact with some of the others from our class, so we can all catch up.

  • Hello all. My father-in-law, Alan Pettitt, was caretaker at Howe Dell from 1966 to 1977, and still has very vivid memories of working there. He remembers Miss Matthews and Mrs Gately, who sent him a calendar for Christmas every year until 2016, which I guess is just before she passed away. He used to go into the school at 6am to start the coal fires in the classrooms and also the coke-fired boiler that provided the hot water. I asked him about the various the various rumours about ghosts, and whilst he didn’t experience anything himself, several teachers told him about having the sensation of being pushed when they about to go down stairs. He did have one surreal episode when he went into Mr Crann’s classroom early one morning to find that a soot-covered owl had fallen down the chimney, and this was around Halloween! Another time (perhaps early ‘70s?) heavy snow brought nearby power lines down, leaving the school without lights and other power for two weeks. Did Miss Matthew’s close the school – no!

Other names I remember are Gaynor More, Brian Reynolds,Victor Reed, Elaine Jennings, Linda Ridgewell, Linda Parker, Adrian Silber, Terry, Jane, Alison, Jimmy, Gerald Slater, Linsdey Russell, Janet Wilkes, Victor Thompson, Teresa Smith Raymond Picket, Susan Warren. My name was Marilyn Bean. Teachers names, Mrs Gately, Miss Greenwood, Miss Leak, Mr Crann, Mrs Grant, Miss Wakefield, Miss Trimble and headmistress Miss Matthews. Very happy memories

  • Yes Mr Crann, he was my teacher in 1970/71 in the “top” class (ie the final year). I think he was the teacher I had fondest memories of, he was very well liked. We went to the British Museum that year to see the Tutankhamun exhibition. Are you a relative Mark Crann? Is he still alive?
The first few photos look quite old. Where do they come from and are they definitely 1970s? I remember going to a pageant there before I started at the school, I think it was 1965. We used to do “music and movement” in the hall or outdoors in the summer on the bit of grass opposite the school assembly hall. That’s what photo 5 reminds me of.

  • Thank you so much for creating this page and the photographs are wonderful. I started at Howe Dell Primary School in 1970 and I loved everyday there. Have grown up with a love of nature, the arts and historic architecture! Wonderful memories. I remember all the teachers too, listed by Adam…..even a dinner lady called Mrs Christmas!

  • Not in this photo, but some of the teachers from 1977 were; Mrs Gately, Mrs Tester, Mrs Morris, Mrs Veal, Mrs Southam (possibly) the secretaries were Mrs Meopham and Mrs Greenfield (I think) under Miss Mathews.
