Hatfield Parish Church Youth Club

By Michael Browne

Robin and Mates do you know who they are?

How many residents will remember the Hatfield Parish Church Youth Club which through the 50s held the weekly meeting in the old Memorial Hall, and on Sunday’s organised a breakfast for members attending morning communion in our club room, the Elizabeth 1st room above the archway in Hatfield Palace. The photo is of a performace by club members who took part in a Parish Evening in the memorial Hall.

L –R  Roger Simms, Robin Browne and Barry ?

All three went to St. Albans Grammar School. Roger  then worked for the Westminster Bank in Old Hatfield and went on to be the Manager of a bank in London, Ontario in Canada. Robin went on to university at Glasgow and became a Naval Architect and moved to Canada in 1974. Sadly have no details on Barry. Roger and Robin by chance now live just a mile apart on Vancouver Island.

  • Can remember the Youth Club. My friend Christine Fanshaw played the piano and we often did a duet at the entertainment night. Chris and I used to cook breakfast at The Old Palace near Hatfield House for the Youth Club after Communion at St. Ethelredas Church.

  • The third person on this photo was Barry Wilson who married and went to New Zealand. He did work for a while with the Westminster Bank. Roger Simms now retired since 2001 and still lives on Vancouver Island (Parksville). Robin now lives on the mainland and still works in his chosen field. Roger is still in touch with Robin and Wendy(Church) Smith and her husband as well as Cynthia (Cull) Paulson and her husband.
