de Havilland Boys' Club

Activities at the club included fencing lessons: Foil, Epee and Sabre
At Joe Guppy's camp site. Preston, near Weymouth. July 1948
We hired boats, no lifejackets, and rowed out to sea.

Before Bill Salmon became temporary warden of the D.H. Boys’ Club at the Fiddle Bridge Hall (click on this link Break Manor Youth Club [link opens in a new tab] for more information) there was another youth leader there also, called “Skip”.

For a few years our ‘Skip’ would arrange for the D.H. lads to join with the St Albans ‘Pioneer’ Mixed Youth Club for camping holidays. We slept five or six boys to an ex army bell tent, which we erected ourselves, and stuffed our palliases with straw to sleep on. Some short lived holiday romances ensued. The popular Miss Tanner, St Albans club warden, and Skip kept an eye on us.
